Well first of all people are definatly not the smartest things. Read Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy. Or watch the movie. But ya it turns out we are the third smartest. Go take a look. But after us I would have to say the african gray parrot. Supposedly it has the mental capacity of a 2 year old human child. Then monkeys. Then potato chips. Yup there you have it.

My friend, I'm afraid to tell you that you have been misinformed. Humans are not the smartest creatures on Earth, not by a long shot. Try cetaceans, they have a good record.

I'd vote for African Grey Parrots ( smartest of all animals)
then bottlenose dolphins ( highly intelligent mammals )
African Elephants a close third.... Amazing smart!

Elephants, apes, dolphins, meerkats, killer whales, pigs, cats, dogs, parrots, and so on.
I suggest taking samples of every mammal on the planet and most birds because I have recognized sentience in most of them equal to humans, and if nanotechnology becomes viable I will make it my life's goal to bring every species to true sentience and human capabilities.

I would say dolphins. Next to Humans and apes they are the only creatures that have sex for pleasure.
