Yes - to avoid an explosive spark near the battery. Start by attaching the red (positive and ungrounded) wire first. Then take the black clip (negative and grounded) wire and attach it to a grounded part of the engine or metal body not near the battery. That way if there is a spark it will not be near the gases of the battery.
