Ummmm...they still do. Did you not see the Lord of the Rings? Star Wars I-III? Spiderman? If you're question has to do with the origin of the term which was coined because people were lined up around the block and there were so many that it seemed like the block would bust under their collective weights, then you have been missing out on this thing called a multiplex. You see, in the 70s most theaters had one or two screens. And there weren't a lot of them around. As a result, people lined up for hours to see a movie at the ONLY cinema in town. Now, most towns not only have multiscreen theaters, but they usually have more than one. I mean I grew up in an area that had over 100 screens within 45 minutes of my house. Also, people buy tickets in advance and online. The sales are still there, and they are quite high, but the people don't have to bust the block to get tickets.

Pirates of the Carribean, Dead Man's Chest is a blockbuster, currently in no. 7 in all time box office hit. The 90s produced Titanic, still number 1 in the overall box office. Spider Man, released 2002 is no. 6. Shrek 2 is No.3, release 2004.
What Hollywood cannot produce now are real movie stars with legendary acting skills.

Most of them do. They buy 10-20 copies of a film when it's released so they have enough to meet demand, and then after a month or two sell all but a few copies at a discount. You can sometimes get old VHS movies really cheap. Most rental places are going all-DVD these days and are selling off their VHS inventory.

They can't..That's why they are REmaking moveis like Jaws, Rocky, Superman, and Star Wars....
Which is okay in some instances..if it's a good remake..but lately I think the real problem is actors..They need to look for real talent instead of awarding acting roles to singers, or models. I guess the old saying is true: It's not what you know..it's who you blow...

Today, overpaid screenwriters want WAY too much money, so many studios are recycling old stuff. You will notice that real talent is hard to come by these days. Used to be great movies, singers, actors, etc., and now everythiing is totally lame.

They pump out so many on a regular basis. Not much originality left. Well, there is, but you have to look for it between all the crappy ones that come out.
