It's our culture. We're taught from the moment we're born that one of the most important virtues in life is hard work, and that if you work hard, you'll get good things.

Therefore, many Americans assume (erroneously) that their performance is directly related to how hard they work, and since hard work is one of the most important American virtues, performance also becomes important by proxy.

I, and probably many Americans, would say "Even work? No no, ESPECIALLY work!". Performance isn't actually so important outside the work environment, but some americans carry it over anyway, probably out of habit..

Our nation is based on business, and business is based on efficiency and performance. That then gets worked into mainstream society and culture. Where are you from?
