That's an unfair question. You don't get to choose the circumstances behind your rebellion.
In other words, you don't get to classify yourself as an insurgent or a patriot. History makes that determination, and not always for the better.
The difference lies in the cause you choose to support. Is it popular? Then you'll probably be judged as a patriot. Is it unpopular? Then you'll likely be judged an insurgent.
Are both of those points of view irrelevant? Yeah, pretty much.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that labels are unimportant. You do what you do because you think you should do it. That someone assigns an arbitrary label to that is completely beside the point.

Very sweet twisty question you have here. The logical answer is patriotic, because you are defending your country. But it is obvious that you are trying to make a backhanded point about Iraq or some similar situation. The problem is that to be patriotic to Iraq you have to be on the side that wants the best for the country. That would NOT be the insurgents.

Did you examine any history in any respect? or perhaps see a action picture with regard to the 30's and 40's. each and every united states had their insurgents and Germany fought resistence in each and every united states. Their assaults did come unexpectedly; regardless of if, the patriots of those international locations did combat, and a lot of alternative international locations had volunteers that went to those international locations and fought with the resistence combatants, and international locations despatched spies, enlisted spies and labored with the invaded international locations superb suited as much as the top of the conflict...the two WW a million and WW2. lots of the early help from exterior components replaced into completed undercover for obtrusive political reasons however the help got here in styles of weapons, funds, foodstuff, components, or perhaps human beings. a number of those classic movies are super and good source of concepts like this. If every person is silly sufficient to assert those human beings in simple terms sat there and acquiesced they're insulting the French, the Polish, the Norwegian and the Russian human beings. regardless of each and every thing it replaced into this resistence that finally gained the conflict mixed with our forces. without it our forces would not are starting to be some distance.

Call me a Soldier of My country...
Patriots or insurgents are all terms that depend on which side you are on...the invader would call you insurgent and your folks would call you a patriot.

Patriotic. However, if my country was torturing innocents because of their religious persuasion or whatever, and some other country stepped in with the purpose of taking out "our" fundamentalist neocon right wing fruitcake coup-de-etat leader, I might just cheer that "invader" on.

He that is the strongest is going to be doing the classification. The press may do its own classification. If the End of the World is really near, many that attempt to circumvent the beast will definitely be insurgents. The beast will call them terrorists. To survive one will have to be technology savvy.

You can justify anything you do as patriotic by simply wrapping it up in a flag.
Just look at all of the dog turds that the president has been handing the people over the last six years. All warm and stinky, wrapped up in a flag- and we call ourselves fixing the world's problems.
And ya'll think he is dumb?
Some call them terrorist others call them freedom fighters. It simply depends on who you ask.

Before it was conquered... a patriot. After it was conquered, probably an insurgent... especially if you were using any means necessary.
