Back in African, people were very close to the color black. Once the races started to mix (European/Indian with black), may people of the black race got a lighter skin tone creating many different shades. Because of this many wanted to be called colored and not black because of the many different shaded. Obviously, "colored" did not stick around and is used today as an acceptable term thought it more accurately describes the many skin tones.

When I was a kid, 50 years ago, the polite term was "colored people." Then came the Black Pride movement in the 1960s and 1970s, "colored" was discarded as a racist stereotype, in favor of "black." Now if you would like to be referred to as "colored", you have to let us know, and we will be happy to oblige, otherwise we go on referring to you as "black," because we think that is what you want.

Probably for the same reason that white people are called white people . . . it's not EXACTLY, PRECISELY correct . . . but it's a lot easier to say white people than "people with lighter flesh tones of peach, pink, and beige." It's easier to say "black people" than "people with darker flesh tones, varying shades of brown." And everybody knows what you mean. "Varying shades of brown" could also be referring to Asians, Hispanics, and Middle Eastern people.

Isn't it a sad commentary that now, in the 21st century, we're still referring to ourselves by our color? We're all just people. People are like cars - sure, they come in lots of different colors - but they all do the same thing.

My cousin says the same thing. She calls herself "pecan tan". I believe it stems from the Spanish... back in the day we were called ******. ***** is the Spanish word for black.

I wonder that myself too but it's better than being called Afro-American or colored. I dislike ***** too because it means black just in Spanish.

some are darker than others, some are quite black but compared to the white race, who coined the term, you are all black. such is life.
