The first web browser - or browser-editor rather - was called WorldWideWeb as, after all, when it was written in 1990 it was the only way to see the web. Much later it was renamed Nexus in order to save confusion between the program and the abstract information space (which is now spelled World Wide Web with spaces).

The original web and HTML spec was written by several universities, so I imagine that is was several people all trying to work out what the spec was.
SGML was created back in the 60's by Charles Goldfarb, so I guess it's kind of subjective to what your criteria is for "website"

For starters you'll want to learn HTML and CSS. some straightforward photoshop skills will be available if you're making plans on designing your website as well. once you want to make a more effective stepped ahead website flash and java will also be powerful. learn HTML and CSS on the minimum.
