Just be there for him. Bring him fishing. He needs closure.

He's not devastated, he's just sore he got rejected. I bet his ex gf did the breaking up, right? Otherwise, he'd be feeling a bit sad, but free.

As a friend, the best thing you can do is distract him (take him bowling or go with other friends to see a movie, etc.). Just be his sounding board, don't opine or make judgments about his ex girlfriend (it's bad form).

He'll feel better on his own. He has to face this breakup by himself.

I know you feel like you have to say something, but really the best thing is to be there for him and listen if he wants to talk. Don't give him words like, "it'll be okay", "there'll be someone else", or degrade her. Probably the only thing that's going to help is time. He will have to go through the grieving process just like when a person dies. Be his friend by being there and don't feel like you have to say anything. If he asks you a question, just answer it honestly, not how you think he wants you to answer.

since we don't know how the relationship ended or what kinds of things were said, try telling him all the goods and bads when he was in that relationship with his girl ( hint: try listing more "bad" things so he wouldn't feel so devestated to be with that girl ). afterwards you should go for ice cream or do something to take the bad moments off his mind.

just be there and listen. Tell him he will get over her. It takes time. Too many fishes out there to catch he will find better than his old girlfriend.

Sounds like you and your Friend are young, maybe keep him occupied, like going and doing some fun things, if he gets withdrawn, please mention that change to his Parents or a Teacher so they can step in and be of help to him.

Nothing! Just comfort him. There's not much you can do. Only time will help him feel better.

Just make sure he knows that you are there for him, anytime he may need you. Other than that, there isn't really anything you can say or do.

Only time is a good healer. Just try and be there for him. Take care.
