People commonly mistake the statutes depicting the Chinese deity Hotei, "The Laughing Buddha" as the ACTUAL Buddha.

Siddartha Gautama, the one that founded Buddhism, was actually very thin (he was a Prince before abandoning his title and all his possessions in his search for enlightment). Most people get confused because all Boddhisattvas are "Buddhas", too (like Hotei, who was modelled on a Buddhist monk) but they are not THE Buddha, the founder and teacher of the religion itself. The thin statues sitting in meditation with eyes partly shut and a smile on his face should usually read "Buddha Siddartha Gautama" who is "The Buddha".

Hope that helps.

And how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

Actually I was a Buddha in Thailand that weighed 5 and 1/2 tons, and it was made of solid gold.
