Russia is not broken, boy. The Soviet Union does not exist anymore ( Russian Federation was 1 of the 15 republics which were combined in Soviet Union). After 14 republics had separated, Russia still the same...

When comparing, be sure you use a map that doesn't exaggerate the northern areas. better yet, look on a globe.
Mercator projection maps are famous for exagerrating the spread in the north, so Greenland, for example, looks as big as Africa (which is bigger by a long shot!). They give a false impression that northern countries are bigger than they really are.
Even so, Russia should still be obviously bigger that the Great White North, eh?
