If your snake is only eating live rats then it is no longer a pet but a wild animal. This snake can grow to over 18 feet in length and at that size could not be handled by one person. This animal need to be weaned on to dead food as soon as possible for its own as well as your safety.

My son has a few pythons, one of them"sinbuha" is her name and she too is very fussy she will only eat defrosted rats "genetically modified rats" doesn't sound healthy Combining outstanding rat physiology with innovative technologies in trans genesis maybe it has changed the smell as well he just wants what he can chase not one with smaller legs....

OK WELL IF THE ANIMAL ISNT EATING THE MOST COMMON AILMENTS FOR A SNAKE ARE MOUTH ROTT(NASTY LOOKING INSIDE OF THE MOUTH, ALMOST CHUNKY AND SOMETIMES YELLOW) AND UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTION(SNAKE "BLOWING BUBBLES", OPENING ITS MOUTH EXCESSIVELY, LIQUIDLY RUNNING STREAKS IN AREAS WITH NO WATER OR A GURGLING SOUND). BOTH OF THESE CAN BE EASILY TREATED IF YOU CATCH IT SOON ENOUGH. SEASONED HERPERS CAN ACTUALLY TREAT THESE ON THEIR OWN MOST OF THE TIME. SO AFTER TRYING EVERYTHING ELSE HERE PLEASE TAKE HIM TO A TRAINED EXOTIC VET.
MY LAST RESORT IS ALWAYS TAKING THE RAT AND DIPPING INTO CHICKEN BROTH... BUT ALSO GIVING THE ANIMAL A SMALL AMOUNT OF VITAMIN B THIS STIMULATES APETITE. YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO CHECK YOUR TEMP SETTING ON YOUR CAGE AND MAKE SURE IT IS READING AT LEAST 85-90 DEGREES. YOUR ANIMAL SHOULD BE GIVEN EQUAL TIMES OF LIGHT AND DARK TO STIMULATE PROPER ENVIORMENT AND YOU SHOULD ALSO MAKE SURE THAT THE ANIMAL ISNT STRESSED OUT BY ANYTHING(IR. A DOG, CONSTANT OVER HANDLING, IMPROPER ENVIORMENT)....
SNAKES USUALLY HAVE GREAT APETITES UNLESS THEY ARE SICK OR GETTING READY FOR EITHER HIBERNATION OR TO LAY EGGS. OFFER FOOD DURING THESE TIMES BUT DONT BE SUPRISED WHEN THE ANIMAL DOESNT EAT.
BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE IF YOU DO NOT SEE A CHANGE SOON TAKE HIM/HER TO A GOOD VET.

No snake will eat something capable of harming it, you should look at some pics of snakes ravaged by rats and you will understand, I keep telling people, NEVER FEED LIVE always feed frozen, if you love your pet and want the best for it, feed him something safe to eat, search under WHY TO NOT FEED LIVE, and you will get some convincing pictures.

If he is hungry, he should eat it. Pythons are somewhat annoying. They only eat what they've been given. If you feed them only frozen/thawed, then it will be used to that. If it's used to eating struglling prey that runs, it's really not going to want to eat something that doesn't run. My ball pythons are the same way. Just try whatever.

well if its hungry enough it'll eat anything. but my boyfrineds lizard refuses to eat anything except crickets and meal worms. he's quixkly out growing them and has to eat large numbers of them but refuses anything else. you can keep trying or just continue with what you're feeding him. i'll ask my boyfrined and see what he says but there's a forum for reptiles its http://www.repticzone.com/ they maybe able to help you more. its a great resource for reptiles.
