Because the artist we wanted to hear was not on on the computer for sale or in any record store?
For instance Chris Ledoux to get a Record or Cassette Tape one would have to send the money to his parents Ranch.
Utah Phillips I have yet to find him in any CD Store but you can find him on the web. I got them from a family member who bought them from him.
The Grateful Dead used to have a mailing list that they would send you a demo of there new music. I do have some of these but I got them elsewhere. This group would give away there music just so people could hear them. I have a letter from them saying to spread the music around.
I betcha there are so many more of you who remember buying music this way? Lets hear your memories...

The Flat Duo Jets' first cassette. If you wanted a copy, you had to give Monica (Dexter's sis) a blank tape to use to make you a copy.

FYI the Flat Duo Jets broke up in 1999. Dex is with YepRoc now. Don't keep up with Crow much.

Here's a site offering free MP3 downloads of Flat Duo Jets:

Here's a link to Dexter Romweber's YepRoc page:

And here's a site offering a free download of a cut from Dexter's latest YepRoc release Blues That Defy My Soul:

There! In keeping with the traditions, I've now passed along a spark of the fire that burns in one of my favorite mad rockers, the lizard king of psychorockabilly, just plain damn good rocking and ballading, the one and only Dexter. If you ever caught a Duo Jets show, you know what I mean.

Umm, would buying cassettes from Columbua House Music Club count? That's where I got the vast majority of my collection when I was a kid. I still have some of those tapes, too. :)

How funny. I was just thinking about this maybe two days ago. Seemed so much simpler then, but now that you describe the process, it really was a pain! I'd check the mail every day hoping my cassettes had arrived!
