ad·jec·tive Audio pronunciation of "adjective" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (jk-tv)
n. Abbr. a. or adj.
1. The part of speech that modifies a noun or other substantive by limiting, qualifying, or specifying and distinguished in English morphologically by one of several suffixes, such as -able, -ous, -er, and -est, or syntactically by position directly preceding a noun or nominal phrase.
2. Any of the words belonging to this part of speech, such as white in the phrase a white house.
Coming back to your sentence, ""Kobe Bryant is a player" - player here is a noun but if you add "good" before "player" then the adjective is "good"... or 'bad" if he's a bad player.

Kobe Bryant is a player - the word player is a noun. Kind of like if you said he was a jerk. Jerk is a noun. The article "a" denotes it is a noun. If you said Kobe Bryant is player, it doesn't sound right because you are now equating player with yellow or funny which ARE adjectives.

An adjective modifies a noun. Player is a noun. In the sentence, it does not modify Kobe as much as it labels him. In the sentence, it is what is known as a "bare object". You could invert the sentence and say "A player is Kobe Bryant" and not destroy the meaning of the sentence, which is part of the definition of bare object. In this inverted sentence, you wouldn't insist that Kobe Bryant is an adjective because it describes player.

In your example, "Kobe Bryant is a player", PLAYER is being used as a noun. You put "a" in front of it, so it's a noun. An adjective wouldn't have "a" in front of it. For example, "Kobe Bryant is tall." TALL is an adjective. You would NOT say, "Kobe Bryant is a tall."
