They have to be more, or equivalently obscure to Diamanda Galas.
My boyfriend really likes her, and Tori, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, etc. So he's going to know the classics, the praised, and the celebrated, but who are some talented, lesser known pop / opera / experimental female performers?

My favorite female vocalist is Hope Sandoval but she is pretty well known. Good luck in finding some new singers. I'll keep an eye on this to see if there is anyone I'm interested in.

Liz Phair(many songs about sex, look up HWC), Peaches (one of the scariest shows I've been to because she was spitting blood wearing a beard and making out with men and womenduring songs), Lucinda Williams (great country rock blues singer, my favorite song is Minneapolis)

Personally I am in love with the Dresden Dolls. It is a male/female duo but Amanda Palmer does the vocals. I'm not sure what genre they'd be but something about her voice I adore.

As well as Rasputina. Female vocals.
Chello-rock? I believe they were called.

Not sure if they'd be the sound you are going for, but I like them. ^_^
