Puerto Rico is a semi independent nation, it has a relationship with the US that some call it a pseudo-colony some call it a treaty between two countries This relationship is called a Commonwealth. Puerto Rico was taken out the non governing territories in 1953 by the United Nations when Puerto Ricans established their own government and created and voted for their constitution after being under a colonial regime from 1898-1948 by US military forces. This period caused a lot of hardship for puertoricans and a lot of poverty. Many fought against the US regime including the first head of government of Puerto Rico, Luis Munos Marin and the leader of the nationalist party , Pedro Albizu Campos which condemed US colonial rule over Puerto Rico. Both were the most important political personalities of the century. Luis Munos Marin created the Partido Popular Democratico, a party that believed in the Puerto Rican nation with a friendly association with the US. The Partido Nacionalista wanted also a Puerto Rican nation but free of US influence. The US decided to quit their colonial regime over PR and left their plans of annexation after the many political battles in PR and the strong nationalistic movements. The Puerto Rico flag was first raised in July 25, 1952 and Puerto Ricans governed themselves for the first time in history since then.
Puerto Ricans are very proud of their national identity and their race.

PR, as a US Commonwealth, is entitled to US protection and gets (*LOTS*) of tax dollars from the US government. Its residents are US citizens, but since they are not an official state, they do not have federal voting priveleges.

They have the Commonwealth government, which is like their State government, but frequently is more important to them than US Federal policies, because that stuff affects them a heckuva lot more than most US laws.

Socially, puerto ricans are Americans, but they tend to identify as a whole more with the puerto rican culture than with US. It's kind of like a Caribbean nation that throws up a US flag just for grins (and tax dollars).

My personal opinion...they should be let go until they can decide to be a state...The island is largely a drain on the US economy.

P.R. is a territory of the U.S. Taken from Spain in the Spanish American War. Every few years the people of P.R. vote either to remain a semi-autonomous commonwealth of the U.S., or for statehood, or for total independence. So far they have chosen commonwealth status.

Personally, I think they would be better off becoming our 51st state. Independence would be a terrible disaster for them.
