I was wondering if the 1980's corvette's came with a six speed. If so what are the specs? Im thinking about a cheap way to put 6 speed in my mustang. Sorry but I love camaro's too. So please dont get mad if I own a Ford. I love both cars. I own Chevy also

1980's Corvettes came generally with a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed auto. Later years (I'm thinking mid 90's forward) offered the 6 speed. I don't think it will work well with your Mustang though. I'd take the earlier poster's suggestion on the BW 5 speed and then beefing up the rear end.

There is a 7 speed! I have a 1987 vette with a 4+3 manual transmission. It's called the Doug Nash transmission. It was the only manual transmission offered between the 4 speed in1982? and 5 speed around 1989? It has 3 overdrive gears in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. It was Chevy's quick resolution to EPA requirements at the time. Corvette had a major complete style change after the 1982 season. It took a long time to retool the production line etc. There was no 1983 Corvette. The tranny is a 4 speed with basically a powerglide automatic latched on. It is economical but a bit tricky to figure out. Currently some C4 drivers want to convert to a 6 speed. I am sure a new 4+3 is not available. Only reconditioned overdrive units are available through aftermarket vette catalogues at around $1,200. This is not a transmission that most mechanics should be allowed to tinker with. It takes a real specialist to work on effectively.

This unit may not fit very well as because of the added length of the overdrive unit, a driveshaft change would be necessary. This unit was not available in any other GM car.

Stay with the Borg - Warner 5 speed. You'll be better off in the long run. If your looking to change final drive ratio, Do a gear change in the rearend.
