I tried but the call wouldnt go through
then i didnt have reception on my cell phone
then the battery died
after that i had so much on my mind i couldnt remember your number

I don't remember any "excuses", if it sounded like an excuse I either accepted it and forgave them or I moved on. I do remember some reasons, "Working late" "Tired" "Got caught up in something". Perfectly acceptable especially if there is a note or a call as soon as possible "apologizing" for the delay. If there isn't, well I learned something didn't I?
