Practice the basic theory (if you don't have books get some) but don't be afraid to just mess around and find out where the different chords are for your self, you will get to know the patterns of your guitar much better if you discover it yourself.

start of with reading notes... thennnnn learn the tablature later on down the road. Take some Melbay beginning guitar books, and they will walk you through step by step. Don't forget to practice your scales. They seem boring, but they will help you. Read the captions until you understand what the lesson is telling you. Practice at a minimum, of thirty minutes a day. Your hands will build callouses, and you will be able to practice longer without it hurting your hands.

Learn as much guiatar theory as you can. It may seem boring, but it is well worth the time you put into it.

You can never stop learning when it comes to the guitar. Its a life lesson that will bring you much joy, through the efforts you make to learn each technique, or song.

Everyone says practice, and do this and that well from what I've learned is ya need to teach someone. You learn by teaching, but don't just grab some kid off the sidewalk, it has to be someone dedicated to the arts of the guitar. And if you can't play a single note and have no knowledge of musical theory, then just forget what I said. I hope this helps. =D
