If there is no explicable reason for a person to behave badly (good childhood, nice life, no psychological problems), yet they choose to harm other people or hurt themselves due to bad decisions, can you say that they were "bad" from the beginning?

I am sorry, but I don't buy this hypothetical: there is always an explanation for a persons behavior. Perhaps you really have to look deeper....but it is there. We are all born with the capacity for both good and bad. It is our choice (either consiously, or subconsiously) to choose which behavior we display.

Yes and no. Yes, because people are born into this world with a selfish need to be here, or to be fed. No, because they learn also how to be good. They just learn how to hurt other people by the ones they love and/or the ones they hang out with.

look up ATAVIST....possibly on the web...i read and have a book called "NOT GUILTY".......a defense of the bottom dog.......by robert blatchford....written in 1918...he answers so many questions that people are asking today ...he uses the word atavist to descibe a person who has inherited a gene...could be centuries ago...and it shows up...bundy...dahmer...in people like that...where there's no explanation for the behavior...this guy was ahead of his time...the book is very profound..i saw it on ebay awhile back so there are some copies around...
