The most common theory is that during the "heavy bombardment period" of Earth's history (4.6 to 3.8 billion years ago) icy comets and asteroids fell is massive quantities over all the inner planets. What made Earth unique is that it lay at just the right place in the solar system, and was just the right size, to retain that water in the form of water vapor. Later, when the Earth cooled, that vapor rained down on the surface as liquid water and formed the oceans we see today.
Venus was too hot, and the water mostly boiled away.
Mars was too small, the water vapor escaped into space or was trapped as ice.
But lucky for us, we stayed wet.

all of the planets are able to hold so much water, because of their gravity. But I think the main question is: why there is so much water in the earth? I guess it's because of the especial condition in the earth in long time ago. because there was already H & O in the universe and they interacted together in earth long time ago.

well you mean "liquid water" and the answer, although complex has a simple side... The orbit of the earth (distance from the Sun) and the thick atmosphere... make conditions suitable for water to be abundant. but that is little H2O compared to H(hydrogen). the most abundant Element on earth.

It will not hold it forever. Sunlight breaks it down into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen cannot be held by earth's gravity so it floats away. We breathe the oxygen. Eventually, the oceans will dry up.

The reason the Earth holds so much water is because IT SUCKS.- - - If the earth didn't SUCK, we would all fall off. I hope this helps!

The gravitational pull that keeps water from floating away, and the Ozone layer to keep the evaporated water from escaping in outer space.

Cuz at one time it was completly submerged by water Gen 1:2,9 He made it that way. To be hospitable for the millions of spiecies of life it was to support.

earth is a big planet, roughly 22,000,000 miles in circumfrence at th equator. plus the gravitational pull that keeps you here.
