You need to retrain your brain. You already have the ability to converse as you have already stated. It's just that the fear of not being able to have some input in a conversation has crept into your thought patterns. For example you might not have a problem at all speaking to someone in your family because they are so familiar. The best thing to do is to listen to what people are saying and forget about that voice in your head telling you that you can't think of anything to say. I have had the same problem and I'm slowly getting better. I really focus on what the person is saying and try to get interested in what they are saying. This blocks out my tendency to listen to my inner thoughts. Negative thinking can be very bad for people's mental health so try to ignore the negative crap on the inside and just focus on the world outside. You will find things to talk about if you practice this way of thinking. Imaginative thinking is something that comes easily to the human mind. The only thing that slows down the creativity is your own personal inner negative thinking. I hope this helps.

You're worrying too much about yourself. Think of some general questions that you could ask someone depending on the situation you will be in. Then listen to the answers and wonder about them instead of thinking of what to say. Questions will come to you and conversation will be easier. People generally love talking about themselves so being a good listener and asking about the other person will make you seem more interesting than trying to come up with some witty statement.

I've always been that way too, but I have improved some. I've learned, most importantly, just to be yourself. Don't worry so much about what people think. Try to talk about things you have in common. You'll be most comfortable talking about something you know about, and if the conversation is about something you don't know about, ask questions. They will respect your interest, and you'll learn more about the subject so you can discuss it next time. Good luck, and I hope this helps!

I had to speak in front of my class in college. The class was huge and it took place in a large auditorium. I was really nervous because my time to speak was coming up. My hands were sweating and then I heard it, this fine girl with a bangin body was experiencing gastronomic distress. It was at that point that my life changed. I realized no one was better than me and I will be damned if I am going to be scared of the judgment of someone who poops, everyone poops, it is the great equalizer.

I think this is a very common thing that we all encounter.
I am not the shy type- yet in front of others that I do not know well, like in a group setting, I shy away from talking too much.
Once I get to know them though- look out! lol

Communication is a tool, and some people wield it better than others.
You need to focus on what you're good at. You feel really pressured to do this. You either need to try to make it work, or face the consequences.

Try to cool down by listening to the people around you, you may eventually have a say on this and that, it naturally.

Ask them questions about themselves - what they like to do, where they are from, etc...people never get tired of talking about themselves! Then you can join in when you get to something mutual.
