xymorons (or oxymora) are literary figures of speech usually composed of a pair of neighbouring contradictory words (often within a sentence). However this is not always the case. The Webster Dictionary defines oxymoron as "a combination of contradictory or incongruous words".
Oxymorons can be used for dramatic effect, for example: Hell's Angels and deafening silence.

An oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms (e.g. "deafening silence") to make a point. Another, similar oxymoron is sophomore, meaning "wise fool".
Oxymorons are a proper subset of the expressions called contradiction in terms. What distinguishes oxymora from other paradoxes and contradictions is that they are used intentionally, for rhetorical effect, and the contradiction is only apparent, as the combination of terms provides a novel expression of some concept, such as "cruel to be kind".

Oxymorons are two words used together in a pharse, but they contradict each other.
Example:
(I'm having trouble here -- so many of the examples that come to mind are from the politican arena.)
Intelligent politicians
Forgiving tax collectors
Homeless landlords (I saw this in the paper the other day. It referred to one man who attacked another for moving into 'his' space, which was a park bench. The first man said he rented it out to other people to get money. Is that weird or what?)
Free credit
Scented air purifier
etc.
