Tons of artists are using similar setups, as they do professional studio recording and editing.

I know, because a large portion of them come through the shop where I help make it happen for them. Some are even shipped in.

We don't just stick in some ramsticks. We run the diagnostics, and verify with the certified pipeline, so that the system is fully current with all warrantees, recalls...

We add the little extra touches that make it a certainty your precious recordings are not lost or corrupted. 3Gb is just fine.

Some consumer-grade machines allow 4 gigs of RAM, but I haven't seen anybody with that much yet. You cannot have too much RAM, but there is a point where adding more doesn't improve perfomance.

It's more than average, but anything over 2 GB isn't worth it for most people.

You also have to take into account the quality, speed, and timings of the RAM to determine if it's bad or good RAM.

As long as your motherboard can support that much ram, then go for it. It can't hurt. If you have a manual for your motherboard, check the maximum amount of ram supported to find out.
