a book that people just peruse over (instead of read from cover to cover), much like a magazine. coffe table books are usually large and expensive, with glossy paper and a lot of illustrations. although there's really no need to place them on a coffe table to show off to your guests, the same way you don't really place pocket books in your pocket.

It's a book you would place on your coffeetable so others might see it when they come over. Personally, I have a photo album on mine.. I like sharing pictures more than some book.

I think that a coffee table book is a larger-than-normal book that would sit on your coffee table almost as a display piece. It could contain pictures of just about anything from animals to scenic nature to architecture to famous people.
They're books that visitors could looks through while sitting on the sofa.

A book that looks good on your coffee table, but you don't necessarily read. Like, a big glossy picture book. One that I have on mine right now is called Women by Susan Suntag. It has lots of cool photos of women in it and people who come over love to look through it.

a book that is just something to flip through, if you leave your guests. We have one called "don't you just hate that" talking about all the terrible things in life. Like empty toliet paper rolls, loud comercials, that evil blue screen on the computer :)

It is a book, usually art/architecture, that would look nice on your cofee table as a showy piece and not one that is usually read.

a book with interesting pictures and little blurbs that would catch your attention and please your eye for a little while, just long enough to get away from the mundane details of daily life
