I play a popular online game alot, and if you join too many games in too fast of a time period you'll get an IP ban from the game server for a while.

I downloaded a program called SMAC that spoofs your MAC address (software side) and will randomly assign a new one. I'm curious as to how this plays at IP address assignment. Sometimes I get a null IP address.

I agree with the Computer Guy that it should not have anything to do with how the ISP assigns IP address.

However, I do remember on some cable modem connections, the provider checks and remembers your MAC address. And if you switch MAC address (like using a difference pc), the cable modem connection will be down for some time until it recognizes it is a difference PC. That's why on some gateway routers, there is a function to specify MAC address. (This function basically supplies the cable modem ISP the MAC it remembered, thus allowing connection while you can add/move/change the machines behind the gateway without the provider knowing)

Going back to the reason you want to run this program. If you get a IP ban from the game server, changing your MAC address won't do you any good. If you have a home firewall or a gateway router, then your external IP that the game server sees will stay the same no matter if you get a new MAC or not.

To get around this IP Ban problem, you can try to locate/use proxy server that is available on the internet. By going thru the proxy, you hide your own external IP so the game server will see you as a different IP. However, I know proxys can be used to surf the web (to get around censors), i am not sure about playing games though.

Hope this helps....

It doesn't. Without spoofing, every network decvice has a unique MAC address. The ISP assigns addresses out of a pool of numbers, they should not care about your mac address.

If the SMAC program gives you an invalid mac address, that might cause problems, but more likely it has somewhing to do with the way it does the spoof, some side effect blocks the DHCP assignment.

All new pc's and notebooks come with there own ip address. So most likely both computers have differnt ip addresses. If your talking about a website the ip addresses should apear the same. If you are using a stand along modem, its time to upgrade and go wireless some your notebook can connect to your network just by being in range. If you have a home basic business, yes go wireless and you'll never have it problem again.

The MAC address is set at the Data Link layer of the OSI Model.

802.1 OSI Model

It is defined by IEEE for every network device connected to a network which includes the Internet. It is what DNA is to each human being.

Changing it for an existing device is extremely risky at best.

IE. the null IP address assignment message you got.

Don't try to trick this. You are literally playing with fire!!!

Best wishes and have fun but be safe.

changing mac address will not help you to prevent that IP BAN, the only solution is to ask your internet provider if they offer STATIC IP ADDRESS for your internet connection, then purchase it.

even if you disconnect and reconnect the internet connection, you will still get the same ip address that you purchased :)
