Tuition varies depending on whether you are an in state student or an out of state student. It varies depending on whether you are a full time or a part time student. It varies depending on your student level. There are several other variables, so your question is impossible to answer without information.

As with any university, the costs will depend upon how many credits you are taking, and whether you are a resident or non-resident of the state. Costs can range from ten to twenty thousand for some schools. Here is the breakdown of this years fees per the NIU website:

Tuition: state resident $4800 full-time, $160 per credit hour part-time; nonresident $9600 full-time, $320 per credit hour part-time. Full-time tuition and fees vary according to student level
Required fees: $846 full-time

Add books to that as well. These costs could easily add another $500 or more, depending on your classes. Housing costs could effect the total cost as well, if you plan to live off campus.

Well it depends. I'm assuming you are an undergraduate. Do you live in the state of Illinois? Will you be living at home or on campus?
Aside from any additional fees that colleges always like to add in (and not counting books) here's what it looks like.
Actually they listed fees...

If you live in Illinois
Resident:
Total Fees: 208.70
Tuition for 12 hours (lowest full time amount): $2504 per semester
tuition for 16 hours is $3339 per semester.

The cost for taking hours in between 12 and 16 varies.

If you DON'T live in in Illinois:
Non Resident
Total Fees $383.70
12 hours: $4604
16 hours: about $6000

So for tuition and fees as a resident you are looking anywhere from $2700 to $3500 and anywhere from $5000 to $6500 for Non resident

Housing is in addition to that.
Books are also extra. Books can run anywhere from $100 to $500 depending on if you can get them used and what kinds they are. Hardback calc books are much more expensive then your chemistry lab book, etc. There are great online websites to get used books though. But order early- so you don't get too far behind in class waiting for the books to arrive. I personally like Bigbooks.com, but amazon is really good too.

P.s. I found this information on the Northeastern Illinois website.

Good luck!
