When both the far left and the far right use the same tactics, from stereotyping to distortions of the facts to slander and personal attacks, how can either side morally claim they are the good guy?

Don’t they know the good guys aren't supposed to be the ones who lie?

IMHO there are many reasons for this. Firstly, I think Dave C hit one reason dead on, but I will elucidate. Some are more interested in being right that DOING what is right. Some of this is an insecurity and a fear of being wrong. Questions of ethics are often ambiguous this leaves people feeling insecure and defensive.

Our western democratic system thirives on the adversarial concept, even our literature is a reflection of this. Man vs nature etc. The market economy and our political and legal systems. Much in the same way that a well trained and confident athelete can compete against an opponent without being his enemy, so too can the truly educated, confident and trained pundit/politician/debater separate the issues, the facts, from the person.

For one seeking to learn, an opposing view is seen as an opportunity. For one seeking only external validation of a particular opinion/philosophy, an opposing view is seen as an attack to be defended against.

Thats SOME of why I think folks get so heated in these discussions, and probably as clear as mud ;)

That is the problem with a known vs. an unknown.

GWB...You KNOW where he stands

Hillary (or Ted Kennedy)...You KNOW where they stand.

John McCain....A good senator that has the best interest of the country at heart.....You don't know if he is for your side or not. He uses too much common sense in his work to be counted on by the left or the right.

They aren't interested in the truth, but just screaming louder than the other guy.

Conservatives tell the truth, liberals lie.

Conservatives win, liberals lose.

Conservatives pwn, liberals suck dead bunnies.
