I don't know that it counts as the "best" place but if you want to get away from everything for a day or 2 you may want to try Sagres. It is at the SW most tip of Europe (but watch out for the winds). I also stayed at a delightful little town on the coast half way between there and Lisbon but unfortunately the name escapes me. The people throughout Portugal are wonderful - you will really enjoy your trip.

I have many favorite places in Portugal. Most favorite that I really enjoy is Nazarre. There you will encounter a very very long coastal beach amidst cliffs and a very cute Artsy/colorful city. You will also have the opportunity to take in a bull fight or show. Lots of little shops and great cafes, pastry shops, restaurants and walking areas. The beach is absolutely GORGEOUS. This area is the heart of fishing. Late in the evening you will be able to see the old fishermans come in from the sea and sell right on the beach, As they did for centuries. Its a great place filled with culture and enjoyment.

Have fun!

well, i live in lisbon and have been living here for the past 7 years.. its reallya great city, full of movement and things to do and places to go. but i must say that Algarve takes the cake. it is the southern region of portugal and has the best beaches ever!!! the town where i usually go with my family is called portimao. its a cute place, but other nice towns are: vilamoura, albufeira and faro... if ur a beach bum, thats the place to go. its about 3-4 hours by car from lisbon.

Lisbon is all right, if you live in a big city.
They are stuffed with tourist gimmicks, tourist menus, etc.

Try rent a car and cruise a bit in the inland. you will see better, quieter, and cheaper places.

As we say here: "Portugal is Lisbon, the rest is landscape !!!"

Sintra and Caiscais were gorgeous. Perfect sea views, and a castle to visit nearby. I loved it even more than Lisbon, and Lisbon offers a great deal of things to do.
