If you are fairly proficient at MS Office products like Word, then I'd suggest a temp agency. I started at one right out of high school. The company I was temping for offered me a permanent job. A lot of companies like to "try before they buy" and will contract with temp agencies. It also gives you some flexibility in your job situation. If a position is not a good fit for you, you can always ask the agency to find you another position. The good news: While you may be changing job positions, you won't be changing employers.
Best of Luck!

Perhaps you don't want to work at Walmart or McDonalds, but I do think a good first job experience would be service related. It's important to work with the public in some aspect to get a better idea of what's "out there." What about at your local Y, or at a local hospital, or elder care facility (<-- one of my first jobs and surprisingly one of my favorites)? Or, say if you have a particular interest, working retail in a specialty shop.

Gradin,
If you're fairly computer savvy, I think online marketing is a GREAT way to start out. It's something you can develop and slowly let build. You could start with GPT sites and make about $200 a month like that, or more, depending on how hard you worked and re-invest that into more profitable business ventures. It could end up being something that grows into something big while you're in college. The best part about online business is you can still work another job like at a car wash, restaurant, umpire, junior referree, et and still build your online empire, especially with the internet these days.
If you have any questions on how to get started just look me using my profile and send me a message. I'd be happy to talk to you about it and get you started on the right foot.

be creative. My first job was as a chicken mascot for the radio station my dad worked at. I had a pretty good time. But also look at your interests and ways you can turn them into cash. What are things you do well...ie sports, art, music? Find local organizations that can use those talents. You may need to be persistent and really tell them how good you are. Be confident and have a plan to tell them how YOU can benefit them. Best of luck in your efforts!!!

Why don't you deliver pizzas? The drivers may not like you because you would take their $, but hey the job is there and if you have a car, that would be a good job for you as long as you live in a nice neighborhood.

Depends if you have skills or a like for certain things. If you like building/carpentary you could start out as a carpenter's helper or apprentice in one of the trades. The building trades are needing workers right now with the housing boom. There's lots of types of work for a mechancial person like millwright, mechanic, electrician, power engineer, welder, or more technical like electronics, robotics, computer techs or programming.

Try a car wash place. It's not very hard work and if you're lucky you might get to drive some nice vehicles.
