I was asking myself the same question for weeks, i finally got a tatoo yesterday. I got a semi-permenant one a couple of months ago just to see what it would look like so maybe you could try that first. I also go it done on my stomach so i have the option to cover it or show it off. Tatoos can e rmoved but it's expensive and painful. There is some amount of pain in getting a tattoo but it's only enough to make you wince, it's more of a stinging sensation which disappears after awhile when the area becomes numb.

If you are trying to figure it out, then the answer is NO.
You need to be absolutely, 100% sure - a) of WHAT you want; b) that what you want, you will want FOREVER (like when you're 80 and your skin is all floppy). Once you answer those two questions, WAIT A YEAR and then if you STILL want the same thing, go for it.
I waited almost 10 for mine - I started wanting it when I was 16 and got it when I was 26. I still wanted the exact same thing, so thats what I got.
It's doesn't NOT hurt. The pain varies by where you get it. An 'unfleshy' area like the top of your foot, the back of your neck or along your spine or whatever will hurt much more than on your calf or on your bum! I got mine on the side of my calf and I have a very LOW pain tolerance and I am really scared of needles. It didn't hurt nearly as much as I was expecting it to - it felt like someone was scratching me really hard with a nail. Colouring in hurts more than the outline. Everyone's experience is different though. (By the way, I LOVE mine).
So be REALLY sure that you want to do it before you do it. Don't let us YAHOO'S decide it for you!! It's all for you.

It does hurt at first but you can get some local anaesthetic cream from the chemist if you're really worried. Think long and hard before getting one though as it'll be there for ever and make sure its a design you will love always. Don't worry what others think and remember people with tatoos don't care if you have them or not.

The question isn't whether it hurts too much, the question is "Am I ready to make a commitment so extreme that I will be willing to live with for the rest of my life?" A tattoo, much like having a child, is not a decision to be taken lightly. I have three tattoos myself, and I actually regret two of them. Visibility is a factor. Many employers frown upon visible tattoos. Also, think about gravity. If you get a tattoo on your breast/chest area, eventually age is going to take its toll and you will end up having an upper stomach tattoo. It's also a good idea to pick somthing that you're not going to hate in two years. Like Tweety Bird, butterflies, giant demons, etc. Take my advice and think it over for a few months. If the idea still appeals to you, you have my blessing. If you decide it's not for you, then you won't have to live with a brand for the rest of your years, or spend hundreds of dollars on laser removal.

at the moment you may feel like you want a tatoo, but noone knows how they are really going to feel in the future (peoples style changes music the listen to changes the clothes they wear changes) so if you get a tatoo now it may very well suit the person you are now, but you don't know if it will suit the person you are in the future.

If you are asking for advice to get one then I WOULD NOT get one. Be absolutely certain that you want one first. Take your time. It's gonna grow old with you and look a bit worse with age. Especially depending on where you put it. And the design needs to be something that is special and you will never regret. Maybe you should try a piercing. They are fun and they are temporary. The minor scar is much better than a tattoo that is completely permanent.

Be warned, when you have one you'll be tempted for more!! I thought I would be too much of a woosey for it but considering how nice it felt I am now a tattoo enthusiast. If you're afraid of needles have the artist do the design somewhere you can't see it. Tattoos you can see like those on your arms or legs can get you down if you don't absolutely love it. If its on your back you tend to forget its even there and you might not hate it!
Keep in mind, that's very permanent! If you're just in a phase get a piercing somewhere. At least those can be removed.

You say your trying to figure out if you should have a tattoo done, just make sure you are 100% about wanting one!!
It doesn't hurt as such, more uncomfortable than pain, it depends what part of the body you have tattooed, top of the arm isnt as bad as a bony part of your body!
Just be sure that where eva you go 2 have the tattoo done, you can see all the tattoo artists certificates etcs, make sure he/she wears gloves, mask etc, and that new needles are opened in front of you are put in the yellow (usually yellow) bin afterwards etc...
Also be brave!!!
