What format is the animation? Is it MPEG or MOV? You can try getting such versions of it or another animation that will do the job with those formats.
Was the animation emailed to you? If so, have the sender send it again (it may be corrupted).
Does the sender have the same version of PowerPoint that you do? If your respective versions are too different, that has the potential to cause a problem.
If you're really in a pinch you can try a still image instead of an animation (if the animation part isn't crucial).
