Why when a movie is released at the box office and lets say it opens at #1, it will soon drop and rarely does it go back to number 1. (The only movie that went back to #1 that I could think of was Passion of the Christ) But with cds/singles, when they drop they could easily go back up the charts?

because most people rush out to see a movie

with a CD the artist could release another single off of it and people might like it more than the first and go buy it

Well, Albums (is that still a term?) will often go back up once they've slid, but it's very rare for a single to do so. As new singles are released from the same CD, it gives the CD "new life", as it were.

With movies, it's just an accelerated parallel to music charts...once everyone's had a taste of something for a while, they're ready for something new. And with movies, when a new, anticipated movie comes along, it ties up a majority of the screens available, and that alone would give a new movie a tremendous advantage over an older one in raking in the $.

That's a short, simple answer; the way profits are divided between movie studios and cineplexes have a bearing on this as well (more pressure for studios to make money on front end rather than long haul).

The majority of people see a movie when it first comes out and they can tell their friends whether or not it was good. People just take their words for it, so it is normal for their rank to go down longer they are out. CD's, on the other hand, can be heard by other people than their buyer. They can sample it before they buy it basically, and get their own prespective of it. Also, CD's are usually released on Tuesdays (most of them anyway) and alot of people don't wanna spend their money til the weekend so from week to week people will buy it, not just in its first week.

Because more and more people will buy CDs as they're friends get them.. but even as people may trickle in to see movie recommendations, newer movies are out .. plus CDs stay on sale for years, whereas movies only get about 4 weeks playing time at the theater
