The compressor is actually an electric motor encased in the housing that you see. It is mounted on springs inside that case. Sometimes, do to age or improper handling during a move, one of the springs will break, causing a rattling sound when it cycles off. I've seen them run for a long time with this problem, although the noise can be annoying.

applpro is correct on that aspect of compressor noise. You may have a blockage or a lot of dirt on the condenser coils or the condenser fan may not be running properly. These two things can cause the compressor to overheat and "bang" or rattle when it shuts off
