That's an old stereotype. Geeks have since broken that infamous mold. Back then, punks used to pick on geeks so geeks withdrew from most socializing.
Back in JHS and HS (way back then), I was familiar with both the tough group and the studious geeky folks. Today, those geeks are in the upper crust and the toughies are in prison.
A good exaggerated example is the TV serial Happy Days. The Fonze represented the tough side, while Richie Cunningham the geeky, studious side.

Because geeks tend to think logically and reasonably. They tend to be more sensitive to things that don't fit well, and societal interactions are always too subjective. There is no way to control what is going to happen, and that is just annoying. Especially in places where you can't spend any time to get to know someone, and appearances are used to make decisions. Geeks fare much better with personal ads, so that they know the person they are talking to is at least interested in doing something besides standing around and getting drunk like monkeys.

It's all about cause and effect. Do geeks become shy or do shy people become geeks. Maybe the shy folks don't make a lot of friends, so they spend more time by themselves, on the computer, playing xbox, and just partaking in "geek" behavior.

Because they are labeled "geeks" which as a bad reputation, giving them a complex and low self esteem.

Because they are different because they are smarter and work harder. They are concerned with the same things other kids do. It isn't stimulating mentally for them. People ridicule them call them names and shun them so they would have the social skills the the average Joe would because he spent his time talking and picking on other kids.
