South Pacific! It deals with the subject of racism and it is done beautifully. The songs are gorgeous and the lyrics are unequaled. Listen to You've Got To Be Carefully Taught. Lt. Cable is right, racism is not, "born in you", we are all taught how to hate and fear. Nellie, the female lead, learns how to change. She is confronted with her own racism, but because of her love for Emile, she is able to overcome it. We could use a little more of that in our world. Oklahoma is a wonderful musical, but the story of South Pacific (from a James Michener novel) is better.

South Pacific is better. Much less annoying than Oklahoma. At the same time Oklahoma is a musical EVERYONE and their mother knows.

OKLAHOMA! Some have siad that it is too old fashioned. Not so! It deals with ( as do most Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals) very real issues of sexual harassment. And remember if it wasn't for musicals like Oklahoma and Showboat we would have the musicals we have today. These musicals bridged the gap between plays and standing and singing songs which did nothing to further the story. I believe Oklahoma was the first or one of the first. It has fantastic music which isn't easy to sing and ACT well. R&H musicals don't just need singers but actors as well. The problem with most productions of R&H musicals nowadays isn't the musical but the way it is presented. that's me for now

Some enchanted evening...

South Pacific hands down.
In Oklahoma they just do way too much hopping and jumping around.

O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A! Hands down!!! I love it. I don't care as much for the whole situation with Jed the farmhand, but --hello!!!-- the rest totally made up for it. Curly is so charismatic and heart throb worthy!!! Lauren is a dynamic character with opposing wants, playing hard-to-get! Is is not high school yet? Choreography is so open and fun. There is a lot of great room for interesting choreography in the dance scene as well as the train station. The grandmother is such a solid character and takes a good character actress. The ditzy girl crushing on Curly is fabulous for someone new to theater who wants to really showcase their talent memorably and comically. Last of all my favorite character, the girl who just cain't say no tops them all. She is open to be a character of all sizes and types and still get a solo.
If this is someone planning to do the play, go for it! You won't regret it.
