It is a contraction of "Hell Of" and means very good, or a lot.
It was a hella deal.
The Texas Aggie football team is hella better than the University Of Texas Longhorns
Go Ags. Whoop!
Edit....is it a contraction of "Hell Of" or "Hell Of A " ?????
I guess it all depends on how you use it. If you see or hear the the word "Hella" you know it is one of the above. I am soooo glad I learned English as a baby.

I hate it..this drives me absolutly crazy..There is an overweight, annoting mooch at work who uses it in front of some word in every sentance that she blurts out of her mouth..most of the garbage out of her mouth is a lie anyway...
example : " Im "hella"hungry..." "I want a "hella"cheeseburger"..or "im Hellabroke, can I borrow 5 bucks for cigs and McDonalds"...
AARRGGHHHHHHH...
WTF!!!!
