when I got my masters degree I had to write innumerable 50 page papers on all kinds of difficult subjects. Nobody could have gotten through that program without good writing skills. My husband, who is the president of a 300 person company, says the hardest skill to find in employees is good writing. So I guess I would say that writing skill is the most important result of any masters program.

Because it gives them an advantage in the workplace for advancement. Management jobs require Masters degrees, if you are in a technical job like engineering or biotech you need a Masters to be a project leader rather than just one of the worker bees. I have a Masters and have never regretted it. The people who think it doesn't matter are not ambitious, stagnant, uninformed, or bitter that they don't have the ability to achieve one. The bachelors degree is the new equivalent of the high school diploma and the masters degree is the equivalent of what was once the bachelors. A high school diploma or an associates degree doesn't mean crap on its own. Getting a higher degree shows that you were willing to put extra effort into achieving your goals and you have the intellectual ability to do so. You are less expendable and more marketable with an advanced degree.

People make a big deal because it is a big deal.

In order to get a master's degree one must earn the bachelor's, and then take anywhere from 30-60 more credits, research, write, orally present and defend a unique dissertation.

Having a master's demonstrates that the person has intellectual ability, organizational skills, and the ability to form detailed unique ideas and then present and explain them.

as for the who cares portion: intellectuals, people who value thought, hard work and effort.

are you serious? people spend many years and a lot of money on school to obtain masters degrees. not to mention the hard work and sacrifices a lot of students of higher education have to make. why would you NOT make a big deal?? what a sad state this world would be in if everyone devalued education that much.

I don't brag about a Masters but some people are amazed at the time, energy, and money I have spent on hours past my first degree.

You obviously know nothing about what is required to get a Masters degree!!! It is extremely hard work. Anyone willing to go through the extra effort to get one shows that they are willing to put forth a lot of effort in the workforce. It jump-starts a good career.

I'm currently attending college for an MBA, wish me luck!!

It's all over rated. I did 1 semester in a junior college. I have spent 20 years writing software. I am now Technical Director in charge of re-engineering & integration - without ANY degree. I am damn good at my job.

A degree only guarantees a minimum level of ability (it's like guaranteed mediocrity) - but a person without a degree can be just as good - or better !

That is an absurd question, do you know how long it takes and how much studying is required for that degree? Why does the sun come out, and I'm warm in the same sentence makes more sense

Because they took the time and energy to get higher education. If you took extra years out of your life, you would want the recognition too. I don't have a Masters but that answer isn't exactly rocket science.
