Could you have made this question any broader? lets see, characteristics about elves:
1. immortal (but can die of battle and supposedly of broken heart)
2. pointy ears
3. tall, fair, perfectly built, with long hair
4. most commonly speak Sindarin though also Quenya
You know, this is ridiculous there is so much information. Go read The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. Or go study up on a site such as http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.asp
And oh yeah, it's ELVES not "ELFS"

Elf info depends on what mythology you are working with, but my absolute favorite source is Tolkien's supplements to his LOTR series. Not only do you get a bunch of interesting stories, you get really interesting "facts" too.
Tolkien point: Elves don't usually smoke, but humans, dwarves, hobbits, and wizards seem to love the stuff. Elves have a real fondness for wine instead!
