I have an '87 Honda Accord. It was a great car until I took it to my mechanic for a tune-up. They replaced all of the belts, the air filter, fuel filters, spark plugs, cap and rotor. Since then, the car has actually been running worse than it did before. The gas mileage dropped from 30 to around 24mpg. It is embarrasingly sluggish on hills (I can't even make it up to the speed limit when I'm going up a hill). And when I'm accelerating quickly (especially on the freeway), something (like a sputter?) happens that causes the car to lose it's momentum for a second and makes the car jerk violently. It's kind of like you're going 60 mph and then suddenly the car loses power for a second. I've already taken the car back to the same mechanic and they wouldn't admit that there was a problem. I'm taking it to a new mechanic next week, but I'd like to get an idea of what could be wrong before I take it in.

Mechanics are like doctors, they don't know much and can really mess things up if they don't know what they are doing.

There is a small chance that something just happened to go wrong, but probably they caused it.

They could have broken an air hose or vacuum hose, the spark plugs might not be the correct ones for the car. They might have adjusted the fuel mixture wrong.

They are stupid mechanics, they should have tested it before giving it back to you.

It's possible that just one spark plug could be bad.

You should take the vehicle back were you originally had the vehicle serviced , ask that one of the technician go on a test drive with you, to demonsrate what the car is doing . If you can't duplicate your concern ,it will also be hard for the second shop to find your problem.

I work at an Auto Shop and time after time I get similar complaints but when they bring it in to the shop. " Well it's not doing it right now" But it was doing it yesterday >?<"@!$#

when you say that "all" the belts were replaced i assume that the timing belt was also replaced at this time. by your description i suspect that the cam timing is off a tooth or 2 this also affects the ignition timing degree for degree if your mechanic [adjusted] the ign timing to compensate for his earlier errors,he probably reset the idle speed as well. i hope you have better luck with your next mechanic. NOTE if this shop wont even acknowledge the problem they probably wont reimburse you for the proper repairs but you should at least ask. then report them to your local better business association

I'll tell you what is wrong with your car.

You had your "mechanic" "fix" a great car. You took it to some bozos who took your money and screwed up your car.

People will tell you to take it back and have them fix it right. Good luck with that. Translation: They will phuck it up worse.

Hopefully you used a credit card to pay for the "work". File a fraudulent claim on the shop. You will get your $ from the creditcard company and the shop will have to deal with your creditcard company. Also, to support your case to the creditcard company, file a complaint with the BBB on the shop. Don't hesitate.

it could be other adjustments that are needed to be made after the fact that they did the tune up. other parts may be worn, ie (the timing chain). it is good to get other opinion on the vehicle

I would agree. Your timing is messed up, or the belts weren't tightened properly. Good luck.
