In a sentence which contains more than one action word, you have to figure out what the sentence is really saying.
Lucy is the subject. She is the one who is doing something.
What did she do? She held the football.
Why did she do it? for Charlie brown to kick.
So Lucy is the subject, held is the main verb.
Sometime's it's easier to break sentences apart like this, and then you can see who the real subject is, and what the action word (verb) is. Some people would think that Charlie Brown is the subject, and kick is the verb, but that isn't true because his involvement is subordinate to the real action, which is Lucy holding the football.

To find the subject, ask yourself-- "WHO held the football for Charlie brown to kick?"

Answer: Lucy

To find the verb ask----" WHAT did Lucy do?"

Answer: held

A verb is ALWAYS an "action word". It is something you do. When looking for verbs just ask yourself if you can do the word that you choose.

Example:
Can you Lucy????.....No, so "Lucy" is not a verb.
Can you hold???......Yes, so "held" IS a verb.

Hope this helps. ;)
