Check out my link for more info, but essentially, Origins, or OSI as it was better known (especially if you played UO, Ultima Online) was bought out by EA (Electronic Arts, yes that EA), and EA essentially disbanded the company after a few years (pissed me off too, cause I was looking forward to another UO-like game, but EA kept cancelling it).
Richard Garriot is working at NCsoft now I think, makers of Lineage, Guild Wars, City of Heroes, and I think he's coming out with another online game, Tabula Rasa. Again, check my link for more info.
Some interesting trivia: When Richard Garriot left OSI, he took the rights to the name and likeness of "Lord British", so in the UO game they made up a story where Lord British disappeared and Lord Blackthorn, his nemesis, took over (in a corrupted, robotic form, as part of an expansion, which I didn't like much). In a funny incident, someone managed to kill Lord British in Ultima Online once (I think he got banned from the game for his "reward" lol).
