You probably have a lot of (needless) stuff loading in the background during start up.

Assuming Windows XP...
Click on Start
Select Run
Type in: msconfig
Click on the start up tab
You will see a list of all the programs that are starting themselves during boot up. 99% of them do not need to load during bootup
Uncheck any you do not have to have load up (for most people that is all of them). If you look at the file name and the directory it is in you can often guess what program they are (like if it is in the Yahoo Messenger directory...)
If you have something that does not work right after this, you can go back and recheck the item.

You might also want to add more RAM memory, and make sure you have at least 10% of your hard drive space free. Both those will speed up the boot up also.

Something is clogging up your system. To speed up, you could add more RAM to the PC or you could do a major cleanup operation using ccleaner (free download).

Basically, also, whenever you install software, make sure you don't set it to run at startup, place icon in system tray etc. Be careful which of those little boxes you tick. RealPlayer is a good example of a program which will screw you up like this.

Go to START, RUN and type msconfig to clean up this kind of problem

Make sure you don't have a bunch of programs you know longer use. Stop programs from running at start up. Make sure you don't have any viruses/spyware/adware.

you are most likely running a version of windows that is too advanced for your system. time to upgrade.

if this isnt the case, you may have a virus.
