Only if you have reason to believe they're involved in something dangerous, otherwise I agree that teens should have privacy

I think it is not only appropriate but also necessary. We live in a dangerous world and there are freaks that would like to lure our daughters away.

My daughter gets very angry, but I check up on her a couple times a month. Once I found out that she had joined a dating service posing as an 18 year old divorced woman. The dating site was sending her photos of men in our area. Scary. I had a hard time getting her out of that one. I thought she was smarter than that. Teens need supervision!!

I don't think younger teens have that right. They don't know enough about the world to know any better. 17 or 18 year olds would be about the age to stop checking up on them.

Yes, it is, if you know they have lied about things in the past. (Only if you're a parent or other adult friend of the family).

ESPECIALLY if it's your PC they are emailing on, and if you find (by reading their emails) that they have violated your trust and lied to you about other things (things you didn't already know they'd lied about)
