Do you think that antigone is a completely admirable character, or is she just as proud, unyielding, and foolish as Creon? In your opinion, is Antigone an innocent martyr, or do the gods punish her for her pride, just as they punish Creon for his?
Explain your opinion.

Well, yes, of course Antigone is just as proud and unyielding as Creon. That's not the important question. What is she so proud of, and why is she unyielding? What about Creon? What does Creon's pride lead him to do, and is it harmful to others or to himself? What about Antigone? What does her pride lead her to do, and is it harmful to others or herself? How do Antigone and Creon interact with the ones they love? And, finally--and this is important--what do Antigone and Creon learn about themselves and others because of the way they act upon their pride and unyielding nature?

Now my questions for you are these: Is Cindy Sheehan an Antigone? Is George Bush a Creon? Both of them are proud and unyielding. Foolish? That's for you to think about, and thinking about that just might help you answer your own "hard question about Antigone." What are the similarities between the Greek tragedy and the contemporary news story? What are the differences? Could it be that Sophocles is dealing with just such issues of individual and family pride, of the power and pride of the State, of independence and sovereignty?

It is an opinionated question. It can go either way. As a teacher and former actress from the play Antigone where I played Ismene, I suggest that you believe in yourself and defend your own opinion. Use facts from the play. Did you agree with Antigone's convictions? Yes or no?

I edited my daughter's essay on this subject... I am NOT going to give you a 6 page synopsis after knowing how hard she worked on it.

If you didn't read it, you won't be able to answer... you merely have to write your opinion and justify it, doesn't matter if the teacher agrees with you or not - it's as simple as that.
