A few days ago my computer started acting funny. It took longer than usual for pages to load, some pages didnt look right..they had errors (no background, no images), pop-ups were everywhere, i cant log into my hotmail account ( i can sign in, but then from there it stops and i'm left with a blank page), i cant even watch some videos on youtube.com. I've tried scanning for adware/viruses (deleted anything detected), I even removed a few programs i dont use from my computer, I have my firewall on..but NOTHING HAS HELPED. Can someone with computer skills, please tell me what i should do about all this? what could the problem be? Can I fix it on my own or would i have to take it to someone to check out?

i forgot to mention that the pop-ups are gone..so i doubt it would be spyware. The other problems are still there though.

I suspect you still have not fully removed the spyware and malware from your system or that the spyware/malware corrupted your operating system files. If you have system restore enabled, back up to before you had problems. If not you will have to dig deeper into the issue. Try some or all of tools found at http://360.yahoo.com/weketch and if all else fails post a hijackthis! log at bleepingcomputer.com or one of the many other forums that will analyze your log. Two other options are to take it to a local computer repair shop or just reinstall your operating system and start over.

1. I hope you are using Yahoo's toolbar. There is an anti-spy button. Use it regularly to delete tracking cookies. Yahoo's toolbar also has a pop-up blocker. Be sure you have it "enabled." There is also an option there for you to check why you are still getting pop-ups if it is enabled.
2. In IE, click Tools, Internet Options.
Delete cookies, Delete files (offline)
3. Check/open your recycle bin. Clean it out of anything you don't want.
4. click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools
Run a Disk Cleanup.
5. If you are using WinXP, right-click My Computer. Select Properties.
Run an "error check." Then run a "defrag." You should be doing this regularly also.
6. If you have an antivirus program - McAfee or Norton, run it.
How many programs do you load on startup? Maybe you could remove something and load it just when you want it.

Your screensaver runs in the backgound. Graphics use a lot of memory. I turned mine off and set my screensaver to "blank."

These are all self-help things you can do before having your system professionally checked. I would like to know if it helped.

sounds like you've got virus problem. You can try doing system restore as someone above me suggested. If that doesn't work, before taking it to a computer store, which will cost you at least $75 or so for diagnosis alone, I would backup all the important things I've saved on the computer, wipe out the hard drive, and just reinstall the operating system. If you don't know how to do so, then yeah, you'll have to take it to a computer shop.

You definitely have a virus or spyware and adware because of the severe pop-ups. Get AVG anti-virus http://www.free.grisoft.com and spybot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/. Viruses and spyware do more than pop-ups and can cause other parts of your computer to stop functioning correctly, if you can load anything on the intert you should be able to load everything (or else it is a software problem most likely caused by virus/spyware).

The instantaneous show screen application ought to say "you're connect to the modem, yet no longer linked with internet" or some thing like that. that is surpassed off to me most of cases, i don't think of you may steer away from it. it continually comes back. there's a good probability, that is not any longer your pcs. go figure!
