Midnight, Vic Falls, Zimbabwe.
The campsite was quiet, I was sitting by a small pool, enjoying the moonlit surroundings. Across the pool were some bushes and trees, I heard some noise there. I thought the young lads next to us were secretly collecting firewood, which is not allowed there.
I got up to look into it, but didn't find anyone.
I went back to the pool and sat down. Then a huge elephant emerged from the darkness, to drink from the pool at the other end. Around the pool was open area. I reckoned I would be more vulnerable when crossing that area, so I decided to stay put.
The elephant saw me all right, it looked at me for a while, then drank from the pool as if I weren't there. No other noise than water dripping from its trunk and my heartbeat.
I cannot tell whether it lasted one minute or ten. It felt like ten. Or more.
Then the elephant turned around and quietly left the scene.

When I got married my husband son was 2. His first night over after we got married he woke up much like this, and my husband told me he did it quite often and must not be a good sleeper. Over the next couple weeks it became clear that something had troubled him. We believe it was nightmares. We have since seen a child psychologist and she confirmed that yes, toddlers and young children can have nightmares. Usually their nightmares are about being abandoned, unloved, or in some cases if something unfamiliar happens that scares them they can almost re-live it. Im sorry your little one is going through this so early, I can say that I've been there, and its tough. I dont know a solution for one that young. As my stepson got older we would discuss what woke him up and why it wasnt scary, but at 20 months, that might be a bit tough :) She'll make it through, she has you!

20 years ago I was in the jungle near Pangandaran in Java (the place that was hit by the tsunami recently) trekking around by myself. There's a huge area of isolated jungle on an isthmus there (if you look at the map) and, at least at that time, there were stacks of wild animals roaming around in there. I got a bit lost and was trying to find the way out, when I realized I was being stalked and surrounded by some pretty big monkeys. I could see them flanking me and at least one beat the underbrush with a stick. I was on a trail and walked fast out of there stamping my feet and waving my arms to look big. But I felt like I was being hunted.....Got out and had fruit bat for dinner...and just 2 weeks ago I found a 3 foot snake in my bedroom. I think it got in through the ceiling somehow. Anyway I chased it around the room with a stick and LOST IT. Pulled every stick of furniture out and I have no idea where it went. Haven't slept very well since.....

I went fishing one day. I was out on a jetty chillin' and two hours later I realized the tide had risen--the jetty was an island! The water was about four feet deep. Then to my surprise a school of dolphins showed up--about six of them. I know there supposed to be friendly but when you are in a situation where you will have to pass by six of them to get home it can really freak you out. It was like being on another planet with highly advanced aliens watching me.

this is embarrassing... i was walking through a woods near my home.. at night.. when all of a sudden [ thats how it goes , no?] the tree tops above me came alive! there must have been 3-4hundred crows sleeping in the branches above my head. when they all moved at once i nearly choked!, the hair on my head stood straight up... the same thing happened to me in about the same spot one afternoon when a wild bird came running out of the underbrush... and then there was the time i asked the locals if i could feed the monkey sitting on a railing at a tourist site in viet nam... they all assured me it would be fine... but when i handed out a banana to the chained monkey he lunged at me [ you know what i'm talking about ] grabbed my wrist w/ both his "hands" and bit down on my finger! oh yeah the locals got a real laugh.... do you know i attempted to give him the banana again... i still cant believe how stupid i am !

One night I was walking home in the dark and came across and unchained dog who snarled and barked at me furiously. I couldn't get past him and to keep him at bay I yelled and cursed at him at the top of my lungs until finally the owner came out and took the dog inside. I think if I had shown the least bit of fear or had run the dog would have mauled me.

What's really frightening, is Man is less than 3% genetically different from that baboon. Don't ever forget that.
