Whenver I put in a music CD or a DVD into my computer, it skips. I know it isn't the CD or DVD, because when I try them on other computers they work just fine. Please don't offer any sort of download. Is my only option to get a new D drive?

this problem usually occurs when the dvd rom gets dust on its head. To solve this problem you will get a Cd rom cleaner disc. Insert that disc and clean the head of your dvd rom. If the problem persists then try using some other dvd while you test. Because in certain cases some cds dont work in some drives although other cds work. Make sure your computer is virus free and you have updated your computer.

Your only option is to replace the drive. If you have a friend who knows anything about computers who can help you, it's quite simple to replace a CD or DVD drive, and they be bought for less than fifty dollars these days if you catch them on sale.

Optical drives work by using a precisely-focused laser. As you use the drive, it loses the precise focus necessary to function. After about 18 months, give or take, it has to be readjusted.

To have a technician readjust the laser would cost several times what the drive is worth, so the solution is to buy a new drive.

Before buying a new drive, try scanning your PC for spyware. If you have a spyware running, it can grab so much of your computer's resources that there is not enough to keep the CD playing correctly.

So....you did not want downloads, but...(it FREE so try it before spending money on a new drive)
Go to download.com and get Ad-aware and run it.

If it does not solve the problem, you can still replace the drive

A DVD-RAM is a rewritable DVD that functions like a removable hard disk. DVD-RAM media can be rewritten 100,000 times before it is no longer usable. See DVD-RAM.

DVD-R and DVD+R are competing write-once formats for movies or data. DVD-RW and DVD+RW are competing, rewritable (re-recordable) formats that unlike DVD-RAM's 100,000 cycles, can only be rewritten 1,000 times. Aimed at the consumer, 1,000 rewrites is considered more than sufficient. See DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

If I were in your shoes I would try to find a new driver for the device and I would clean the laser with a q-tip and a little rubbing alcohol.
