No. YOu are not allowed to grab onto the rim while you are trying to dunk because it is considered offensive goaltending because you are giving yourself an unfair advantage. On the other hand, after you have dunked, you can hold onto the rim only if there is a player underneath you, in which you hold on for the saftey of the player beneath you and the saftey of yourself.

YES YOU CAN> you can hang onto the rim after a dunk. but if you hang on too long they will call a tech. UNLESS you hang on as to not injury yourself or land on someone below you......
do you not see SHaq pull the rim down and then it snaps up... the rims they use in NBA, college and High school are called "break Aways" as the players dunk and pull them down then let go. they snap into place, causing less tension on the glass backboard and loweing the possibility to breaking or cracking the glass.
those who say NO are IDIOTS> and dont play basketball.
MISREAD QUESTION, ACTUALLY NOT GOOD QUESTION. that would be offensive goal tending, or interfering with the basket. in that case== NO

You can not grab the rim to help you get high enough to dunk. You can hold onto it after you dunk though.

if you dont do the dunk successfully then no. because if you let go of the ball and then grab on to the ring that would be offensive goaltending.

Not unless you're playing streetball in the hood with Sebastian Telfair and Stephon Marbury or if you're on the AND 1 tour.
