Hi there,

Here's how using regular birth control as emergency contraception works:

1. Every brand is different. The site below has a list of all the brands and tells you how many pills you must take for the drug to be effective.

2. It's best to do this in two doses. The first dose should happen before 5 days after having unprotected sex.

3. Take some medication to reduce nausea when you do this, because they can make you feel sick.

4. If you vomit the second dose up, stop taking the pills. The effectiveness will probably be gone at that point anyway.

After doing this, keep these Planned Parenthood guidelines in mind of what may happen:

* Your next period may be earlier or later than usual.

* Your flow may be heavier, lighter, more spotty, or the same as usual.

* If you see other health care providers before you get your period, remember to tell them that you have taken emergency contraception pills.

* Schedule a follow-up visit with your clinician if you do not have your period in three weeks or if you have symptoms of pregnancy.

* Be sure to use another method of contraception if you have vaginal intercourse any time before you get your period again.

* Continue using the birth control method of your choice for as long as you want to avoid pregnancy.

Here's the site, please look over it to see how many pills you should take and which colour:

The site also has information about effectiveness. In general, before 120 hours are up, there is still effectiveness. If you are still worried, see a doctor or gyno ASAP.

Good luck!

If you're talking about birth control pills, it's not likely to have an impact on whether or not you would get pregnant. This would depend more on exactly when in your cycle you had sex, AND, the pill is meant to set your body up so that it doesn't become pregnant - it doesn't do anything to "undo" what's been done. This is why you still have to use an additional method of birth control during that first month on the pill - it takes time to take effect. The only thing that helps after is the "morning after pill", which must be prescribed by a physician, and taken within the first 72 hours after sex.
