It has lots and lots of gnostic references -- gnosticism has been a favourite with Hollywood screenwriters since about 1995 (about when CGI began to make an impact). It made some early Christian references (e.g. Trinity); and ancient Greek and medieval references in the sequels (Persephone, the Merovingian).

I dont know. May be they are related by time & space . Early Egyptians always believed that there is a life after death in another world for which they mummified the dead body and kept preserved.
